Chana dal Pulao - Black gram urad dal

Ingredients

4-5 servings
  1. 1/2 cup basmati rice
  2. 1/2 cup bengal gram(chana dal)
  3. 2-3 onion (sliced)
  4. 1 tomato chopped(optional)
  5. 2 green chillies chopped/slit
  6. 1 tsp cumin seeds
  7. 1 bay leaf
  8. 3-4 cloves
  9. 4-5 black pepper corn
  10. 1 black cardamom
  11. 2 whole dry red chillies
  12. 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
  13. to taste salt
  14. 2-3 tbsp oil

Steps

30mins.
  1. Wash chana dal and soak it for atleast 2-3 hours in warm water.Soak rice for half and hour too.
       
  2. In a heavy bottomed vessel heat oil,then add cumin seeds, cloves, black pepper corn, black cardamom, dry red chillies and bay leaves.saute for few seconds.
       
  3. Add onion and cook until golden brown in colour.Add red chilli powder,green chilli and saute on a medium heat.
       
  4. Add tomatoes and chana dal,saute well.add about 4 cup of water and salt and let it come to a boil.
       
  5. Add washed and soaked rice to the boiling water and bring it again to a boil.Let it cook for 3-4 mins on medium heat.
     
     
  6. Now lower the flame and cover with lid.Allow it to cook in it's own steam for few mins or until water evaporates completely.Switch off the heat and leave it covered for few more minutes.
     
     
  7. Chana dal pulao is ready to serve. Serve hot with curd or as it is. It tastes yum.
