Spring Onion Dal - Black gram urad dal

Ingredients

  1. 1/2 cup tuvar dal (pigeon pea lentil), soaked for 30 minutes
  2. 2-3 bunches spring onion
  3. 2-3 tbsp. oil
  4. 1 tsp. mustard seeds
  5. 1/4 tsp. asafoetida
  6. 1 onion, chopped
  7. 1" ginger, chopped
  8. 2-3 garlic cloves, chopped
  9. 1 sprig curry leaves
  10. to taste salt
  11. 1/2 tsp. turmeric powder
  12. 1 tsp. coriander powder
  13. 1 tbsp. red chilli powder
  14. 1 tsp. sambar powder
  15. 1 tomato, chopped
  16. 1 tsp. coriander leaves, chopped

Steps

  1. Pressure cook the soaked lentils along with the chopped spring onion and turmeric powder in 1 1/2 cups water for 5-6 whistles.
     
     
  2. Heat oil in a pan & temper with mustard seeds. After it stops spluttering, add onion, curry leaves, ginger, garlic & asafoetida. Saute till light brown.
     
     
  3. Add red chilli powder, sambar powder & coriander powder. Mix everything well.
     
     
  4. Add the tomatoes. Stir fry till it is mashed.
     
     
  5. Add the boiled dal and salt. Simmer on a low flame for 4-5 minutes.
     
     
  6. Serve, garnished with coriander leaves.
